Dental Crowns At Our Las Vegas Dental Office
At Modern Dental Care, we offer a number of cosmetic restoration dental services, like dental crowns. Dental crowns are a cosmetic restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay.
What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are essentially a cap that covers the original tooth to restore or improve its size, shape, and strength. A dental crown may be needed to strengthen a weak or cracked tooth, restore a tooth that has been worn down, cover a tooth with a large filling, cover an implant, etc.
Dental crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. Unlike fillings, which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth.
What is the procedure like?
To prepare a tooth for a crown, Dr. Edington will file your tooth down. He will take impressions of your tooth to send to a dental laboratory. A dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the dental crown is placed. Although your new dental crown may take some time to complete, Dr. Edington will create a temporary dental crown during your visit that will last until your permanent dental crown has arrived from the lab.
Dental crowns are "cemented" onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth's new outer surface. Dental crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong; however, metal dental crowns are still used in some dental offices.
